Darbhanga

The name of the district has been derived from its headquarter and principal town, which is said to have been founded by Darbhangi Khan. It is also said that the name Darbhanga was derived from Dwar-Banga or Dar-e-Bang meaning "the gateway to Bengal". Darbhanga is one of the important districts of North Bihar in the very heart of Mithilanchal - the fertile, alluvial plains of North India. Under the British rule, Darbhanga was a part of Sarkar Tirhut up to 1875, when it was constituted into a separate district. The sub-divisions of the then district Darbhanga were created as earlier as Darbhanga Sadar in 1845, Madhubani in 1846 and Samastipur in 1867. Darbhanga was part of Patna Division till 1908, when the separate Tirhut Division was carved out. Darbhanga became the Divisional headquarters in 1972 when all its three sub-divisions got the status of separate districts. Thus the present Darbhanga district took shape.

 Madhubani

The district of Madhubani was carved out of the old Darbhanga district in the year 1972 as a result of reorganisation of the districts in the State. It used to be the northern subdivision of Darbhanga district. It consists of 21 Development Blocks. Bounded on the north by a hill region of Nepal and extending to the border of its parent district Darbhanga in the south, Sitamarhi in the west and Supaul in the east, Madhubani fairly represents the centre of the territory once known as Mithila and the district has maintained a distinct individuality of its own. Madhubani is famous for its ancient rural art, Madhubani Paintings. This is the painting form crafted by women from Madhubani.

 Sitamarhi

The name of Sitamarhi is on the name of Sita. She is the loving wife of Maryada Purushottam Rama. He is the king of Ayodhya. It is lovely religious place. It is the place of the temple. The most famous temple are Janki temple, Ram-Lakshman-Sita temple, Nageshwar temple etc. Sitamadhi is 60 km from Darbhanga and 130 km from Patna. Sitamadhi has a past that pre-dates history. When Sita was going to Ayodhya, she stay and rest here. The place Bodhayan Sar is in Sitamadhi, where lots of MahaKavya is written by Bodhayan
